Phase 1 - Crosscut & Bridger BOwl Trails

Successfully Built 3 New Trails in Bozeman Summer 25!

We hit our fundraising goal of $300,000 on September 1, 2025. Which was a huge accomplishment! Thank you to all those that donated, participated in an event this summer that went toward the project, and spread the word.

These trails officially opened to the public on September 7, 2025!

About Phase 1 Trails:

GOLDEN RULE

Distance: 1.3 miles

Direction: Multi-directional

Rating: Green

This scenic trail winds through Crosscut’s forested creeks and gently rolling terrain. Named both for our favorite virtue and in tribute to Bob Rule—who loved his bike and this community—Golden Rule invites a reflective ride. Cruise past towering firs, a cool meandering creek, and groves of fluttering aspen.

BIG THIGH COUNTRY

Distance: 3.0 miles

Direction: Multi-directional

Rating: Green

A rolling ribbon of trail that pays homage to the real heroes of mountain biking: the thighs. Big Thigh Country climbs easily through loamy brown pow, bursts of wildflowers, and patches of ripe huckleberries. Large swooping berms keep the energy high on the way down. It’s a smooth pedal in both directions—but remember, uphill riders always have the right-of-way.

GNOMADIC

Distance: 2.2 miles

Direction: DOWNHILL ONLY

Rating: Blue Freeride

A playful, progressive freeride experience with intermediate and rollable features, Gnomadic is as whimsical as its name suggests. This trail honors our mascot —the trail gnome—and its lines are as adventurous as the name implies. Riders travel through four distinct lands:

  1. Warm-Up Land– a mellow intro to get your bearings.

  2. Featureland – optional airtime and big berms.

  3. Zoomies Land– fast, flowy forested features and fun.

  4. Land of Lift-Off – airtime awaits!

    As always: Pre-ride, re-ride, free-ride.

BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT!

We’re thrilled to announce a partnership between Bridger Bowl, Crosscut, and The Dirt Concern, the Bozeman Chapter of SWMMBA, to create 7 miles of purpose-built mountain bike trails right here in our backyard!

Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with land managers, assessed the terrain, and designed a trail proposal that will offer new biking opportunities for Bozeman, Livingston, and Southwest Montana. For years, our community has dreamed of having mountain bike trails at Bridger Bowl—and now that dream is becoming a reality!

The plan is to bring in professional trail builders to craft two distinct flow trails, forming a loop that starts at Crosscut and climbs up to Bridger Bowl. One trail will be a multi-directional route perfect for climbing, while the other will be a moderate downhill flow trail featuring progressive features. Both trails will be built to the highest standards, enhancing user experience, sustainability, and resilience. They will provide crucial access and connectivity to existing routes on Bridger Bowl and Crosscut properties.

As of December 20, 2024 the Request For Proposal (RFP) was open for bidding through January 31, 2025.

We received eight submitted bids, with 3 different builders being selected for the project. The Connector trail will be constructed by Double Cut. The uphill trail will be constructed by Dewolf Dirt Co. And Lastly the downhill trail will be conducted by Terra Flow Trails!

Phase 1 of this project set to begin in the summer of 2025 once the snow has melted. Weather permitting these new trails could be ridden for the first time in September of 2025.

As of March 1, THREE trail builders have been selected to build the 3 segments of this new trail system. We used a set rubric to review the received bids to come to this decision in partnership with Bridger Bowl and Crosscut.

Double Cut LLC was selected to build the connector trail! Double Cut LLC was formed in 2019 and is based out of Bozeman, Montana. The approach to trail construction at Double Cut is simple: design and construct trails that are enjoyable across a multitude of user groups while ensuring long-term sustainability and minimal future maintenance. Double Cut has deep roots established within Southwest Montana and a dedication towards providing the best product possible even long after project completion.

Dewolf was selected to build the uphill trail! Established in 2020, DeWolf Trail Excavation (DTE) is a trail building enterprise. For the past 5 years DTE has built progressive flow trails throughout Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Embedded into the core of this company is a tireless passion to build phenomenal trails in wild places. By respecting land, utilizing onsite native materials, ensuring responsible construction processes, and being a steward to the environment DTE not only builds trails but embodies holistic environmental appreciation through trail building.

Terraflow was selected to build the downhill trail! Terraflow was founded in Whitefish, MT in 2009 with the goal of bringing modern trail building techniques to the state. Terraflow’s first major project, beginning in 2009, was construction of The Whitefish Trail, a sprawling network of multi-use trails that loosely encompasses the public lands surrounding the northwest MT resort town. The company’s flagship project is Legacy Bike Park in Lakeside, MT, where all trails and shuttle roads were designed and created by the Terraflow Team.
